Import

Having determined the best international markets for your products, you need to evaluate the most profitable way of export and choose an import company that will suit you. There are several import methods in Slovenia and Croatia, and your particular service or products will detemine import licencing, join-venture system and sales and marketing strategies. Entering a market in partnership with a local company gives you the most valuable advantage of the importer's experience on the local market. Import will demand you to follow the local regulations and for particular products, basic understanding of the regulations, market specifics, and later on translations, and maybe repacking. Once you've decided to export to Slovenia and Croatia, you need to choose the right partner.

Thanks to the fact that Slovenia is a full member of the European Union, the costs of importing goods has fallen drastically - the major cost will remain - transport. The same import regulations apply as for other European country. In Croatia, however, the situation is not so simple, the regulations are slowly moving towards the European ones, and that is why you need a good partner with experience with international products and import.

A good import business is the kind where the two partners can find a system, that works for both of them. By system of import we mean: calculation, benchmarking and price politics, quantities, marketing activities and budgets, in-store and key-account activities. All these should be included in the basic agreement between the two parties. Import of products demands a very serious approach from the partners, all market specifics should be taken into consideration - don't forget about the strenght of local competition producers, in many countries retailers will prefer local producer simply with the thought "my country", and not taking in consideration that the imported goods might be better for the final consumer than the local products. Also, by competition, local production is "forced" to improve.

Import is something that has been a part of all economies, where borders (were) are not completely closed. Basically, the international exchange of goods allows us to get products, we can't produce, and sell products others can't produce. Nowadays, this might seem a rather ancient definition, because with progress most countries are able to produce enough different things to survive. But something else happened - people strated travelling, cheaply travelling, and therefore found many new products they could use - and import as we know it was born.
